Or are they from the same plant but just harvested sooner or later or processed differently?

Why is black pepper stronger than white pepper?   And where do pink peppercorns fit in?

Also I've noticed some US chefs going potty over Red peppercorns lately. What's so great about red peppercorns anyway?  Is it just a fad?  Or are red peppercorns something special?
