From a human perspective, possibly not - all we see is destruction - but when you think about the wider world of nature, there are possibly some huge changes created by tornadoes.  Whether you think that is good or not depends on your perspective - a huge tree might be jolly upset at being uprooted, but the seedling below gets to see light.

Similarly, many seeds will be picked up and redistributed places where they would not normally get.  I'd imagine that you'd be quite happy if a blueberry orchard appeared after a storm, but not if it was japanese knotweed!

Yes I take your point...but tornadoes rip up everything willy-nilly. Man could tear down a tree that was blocking light and scatter a 1.50 packet of seeds and, hey ho, you've got your blueberry orchard. And it'd be a blueberry orchard in the right place.

I have lived through three serious typhoons in Hong Kong and all they are is destructive b**stards. End of.
