Where is the world's smallest island?
« on: 15 October, 2014, 08:23:35 PM »

This is my candidate...an island called Just Room Enough somewhere in Canada. Are there any other officially smaller islands in the world that aren't just rocks?

I've tried to answer this at various times but could never find any actual measurements of the islands.
I still don't have measurements of the areas but at last I've found an answer.
Tom Thumb Island, which has one tree and two shrubs, is listed as the smallest island in The Thousand Islands of which your island is part.

Just found this - the smallest island with a building on it but I don't know ths size compares with Tom Thumb Island.

Another vote for Bishop's Rock, here (both from myself and the fine chaps at Guinness, apparently), together with a dose of just how us Imperial Brits defined what makes for an island back in 1861, which went something along the lines of:

"It was decided that if it was inhabited, the size was immaterial. However, if it was uninhabited, it had to be “the summer’s pasturage of at least one sheep” – which is about two acres."

So does it really come down to how we define what is an island...compared to what is just a rock?

There seems to be two quite separate and conflicting definitions of the minimum qualifications for island status in the posts so far...

First there is Mrs Too's Law in her Wikimapia link which states quite categorically that an island "Must have at least two trees to be considered an island".

Then there is Siasl's Law which states that, to be recognised as an island, it must have at least 2 acres (ie the equivalent of “the summer’s pasturage of at least one sheep”).

(Both these laws promptly knock my contender of Just Enough Room Island off the map because it only boasts one solitary tree).

So two further questions spring to mind...

Q1   Which definition of island status should I.A. support?

Q2   Does anybody have any info on the relative acreages of these two little islands? That might help settle the question.

So, is it to be trees or the digestive capacity of a sheep?

Could the Moderators give us I.A.'s official standpoint on this burning question?

Certainly, it's what we're here for - IA's definition of an island is that it must be at least 1 acre, ideally with at least one tree of any variety.
I can't think anyone would sail out to an island with two sheep and leave them there only returning to shear them and say hello...and everyone knows if you're castaway on an island you get at least one palm tree, that's not just IA law.
