Mystery site......can anyone throw some...
« on: 18 October, 2013, 06:41:17 AM »
......light on this place? It has a sign on the gate Thames Water Angelinos????
It is surrounded by a dense 30 foot cupressus screen, with high elevation  floodlights dotted around the site and is in the middle of nowhere.
There is nothing in the area called angelino - the nearest is a restaurant in Oxford - 20 miles away.

Pumping station? http://www.andronikos.co.uk/Anno_CRM-EH.php?id=3171&view=incontext

If you do a search as per the attached image, the info in the pdf (first result) seems to place it correctly.

Been there - done it - but still no clue or reason for naming a pumping station Angelinos. Its so incongruous in that setting.
a mile or two away is another incongruity:

I'm not overly keen on sewage - but nice kit! 8)

Angelinos is a clean water pumping station which apparently supplies the town of Banbury - evidenced by accounts in local papers about the plight of those good townspeople suffering an interruption to their H2O supply for a couple of days when angelinos packed up .
I only got interested in the site because driving past it I thought it was something secret because of the high screening of Leylandii and the floodlights, oh! and a windsock.
But approaching it from a different direction I came across the gate with the notice on it. It was the name angelinos that has bugged me ever since.
I can only surmise that the Thames Water engineer who designed the place was called that, there is no local connection.

In the late Iron Age, a settlement was established near Woodstock in Oxfordshire. Cotswold Archaeology excavated the site in the late 1930s and found reference to an old trackway known as Angelinos. Subsequently, a major pumping station was constructed in Woodstock to provide water to Ardley and the surrounding area.

Due to the importance of the site, English Heritage made a case for naming the station Angelinos.

This was adopted by Thames Water in the 1950s.

I'll be going there next week. I very much doubt that I'll be seeing anything mysterious.

Interesting stuff, Easywriter. I am sure that answers Antonymous's query 100% if he is till interested in  his niggle that started back in October 2013. Everything comes to he who waits.

Also, thanks for mentioning Cotswold Archaeology - I hadn't heard of them before even though the Cotswolds are bursting with ancient past relics and sites. So I googled Cotswold Archaeology and have just spent a happy hour nosing round their website and reports. Thanks from me again.
