I think its a poetic corruption of hula hula skirt, a grass skirt worn in Hawaii

I'm not sure about the harlot side of things??? She sounds like a very nice girl to me.
A South Sea Islander who had been dreaming of a nice Englishman coming and making her his wife. OK  I agree choosing a renegade banker might have been a big mistake but.......
