Can you identify this weird bird for me?
« on: 13 January, 2018, 11:09:37 PM »
Here it is. It's a bird David Attenborough has never tackled. It is a beautifully weird bird - very long-legged like a crane or a heron - but with an eagle-like savage hooked beak.

But that's not the weirdest thing about this bird.  As you can see in the video clip, it attacks cobra snakes etc and stamps them to death and then eats them.  Weird!

The video clip is 10 minutes long but you only need to watch the first 60 seconds to get the picture.  The trouble is there is no voice-over commentary and so no there's no name given for this zany bird. Anybody got even half an idea what bird this is?

It's a Secretary bird ( Sagittarius serpentarius) . It stands up to many animals larger than itself as well as the cobra . Short video (three minutes) about it .

Thanks Cosmos! I've heard of a Secretary bird but can't say I've ever seen one before.  And as for it being called a Sagittarius serpentarius - well I'm a Sagittarian so that's even more reason why I should have known it.  But I didn't.  Thanks for plugging the hole in my knowledge.
