Me, I love chillies. But my cat turns up his whiskers at the mere mention of a chilli and runs a mile.

So, I started wondering...Is my cat weird?  Or is it unusual/unheard of for animals to eat chillies off the bush?

Are there any animals at all that are known to eat chilies in the wild?

Yes. I Googled.

Birds do. The ingredient in Chili peppers that makes them spicy is a lipid called Capsaicin. However, Capsaicin only affects mammals. Any other animals besides mammals can eat them without feeling a burn. Birds are the primary animals to eat Chili peppers and they are the distributors of Chili pepper seeds.

Well, Jacques, you surprise me yet again. It's a total surprise to me that only us mammals who react to the burn in chilli peppers and that other creatures such as birds don't feel a thing!

And I bet that those birds are more than slightly glad they do not feel the burn if birds are distributing chilli pepper seeds the way I think birds are distributing chilli pepper seeds!

It is yet another miracle of Darwinian evolution - if birds weren't all immune to chilli seeds then birds would all be chirping the same song - that famous Johnny Cash ditty called 'Ring Of Fire'.
