A bit late I admit but I now have it (from possibly dubious sources) that not one, but two US presidents have been arrested while still  in office - their offences were far lighter than those of President Nixon who, in my opinion, should have been arrested while in office and probably a lot far worse.

The first arrested President, the now somewhat obscure 14th President, Franklin Pierce, was arrested for running over a poor old lady with his horse. The case was (rather conveniently?) dropped for the lack of evidence. I can't find out if the elderly lady recovered well or not.

And the far more famous (and impetuous) President Ulysses S. Grant was arrested by a Police Constable West in Washington DC for repeated speeding in his racing buggy.

PC West arrested Grant and duly escorted him to the police station, where the leader (who had helped win the Civil War) was swiftly booked and fined. He had to pay a $20 fine. As $20, even in 1913, is now worth over $500, then Grant's $20 fine in the 1860s must have been a really hefty slap on the presidential wrist.

For more,, check out these sources - the Grant one is particularly full of more details....
