Title: What's new?
Post by: Duffield1 on 16 March, 2009, 09:41:52 AM
As the site is changing as I get to grips with the software, I'll post updates of what I am doing here...

If we get to people with more than 6000 posts, we'll have to look at where we go from there, but that should be a while off!
Title: Guest questions
Post by: Duffield1 on 17 March, 2009, 06:55:48 PM
Another update.  I've changed the permission settings so that guests can now ask questions, as well as registered members.  Hopefully, this will encourage people to give us a try, but if this ends up being abused and we have all kinds of nonsense posted (or postings by people who have been kicked out of the site), I'll disable this option again and we'll go back to being a members-only site.

Rules apply to guests in the same way that they apply to full members.

Please note that guests cannot answer questions, modify them or even close them - just post them.

Just for info, we've closed the site to guests for the moment -stacks of spam yesterday.  We may re-open to guests, but if people abuse the site, we will close it down to guests again.

Legitimate users can simply register if they want to use the site.

That's good news in a way, it means we're getting picked up on the search engines and people think that there's enough traffic here to make it worthwhile spamming the site.

Just for info, I tried to re-open the site for guests to post questions again today, but once again, we had porn spam posted within minutes, so I have deactivated that option again.

Shame.

Maybe post something on the first screen a new person sees to the effect that registration only takes two minutes and we need you to register to prevent our site being swamped with spam; and that unregistering is easy too if they decide they don't want to hang around.

I'm suggesting this because often I will not use a site because they force me to sign up to use it *without* explaining why... if we explain why folks might be more inclined to sign up?

Good plan, Red.
I've put something in the 'news' line at the top of the front page - not sure this is the best option though.

Any chance of making that "news" item a bit bigger, or flashing, or something?

Even knowing about it, I'd missed it for a while!

The slightly smaller font, allowing it to fit on one line, looks better. Nice job :D

There is a ridiculous amount of spam in the chat right now, is it possible to get a new chat?

Which area are you referring to as "chat"?
We're pretty hot on spam - something to bear in mind.

the H looks much nicer as you said much meaner, even the 3 door normal looks sportyish. I would realy consider buying the H. But by the looks of the new one i would never by that.

Which part of the site does this refer to?
I'm afraid at the moment you're not making much sense, your initial post referred to spam in chat, we have no chat area and now this post bears no relation to any open questions.

Have a good look round to get familiar with what it's all about, you might find it useful to quote to what you're replying as you may have more than one site open at a time and be replying here to something on a different site.
